Rubble Is The Ground...
I've been reading Anne Lamott's newest book of essays, Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith. Though not for the faint-hearted or the conservative-hearted - let's just say that Ms. Lamott is not on the pep squad for the Bush administration - I've enjoyed the read. She's a broken women with a messy life who finds an honest hope in Jesus but perhaps not the sort of hope that many evangelicals expect from their fellow believers. I think her brokenness, her messiness, her clinging, and her perseverence should cause us to pay attention because I think we all need to be reminded to be broken, messy, clinging, and to keep at it becasue I think it's easy to forget that these things are not just ok, but good.
Anyway, I wanted to share one quote that I came across because I thought it was well put. So without further ado...
I have survived so much loss, as all of us have by our forties-my parents, dear friends, my pets. Rubble is the ground on which our deepest friendships are built. If you haven't already, you will loose someone you can't live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and you will never completely get over the loss of a deeply beloved person. But this is also good news. The person lives forever, in your broken heart that doesn't seal back up. And you come through, and you learn to dance with the banged-up heart. I love Anne Lamott. _Operating Instructions_ should be given out by all hospitals and birthing centers to make people feel better about parenting! I'll have to read that one.
I loved Operating Instructions - especially the bit where she hears Sam whimpering but won't get up unless he starts screaming which he never does, but it turns out that he has fallen between the wall and the futon.
I like Plan B though not as much as Traveling Mercies but, I think I'm enjoying the new one the further it goes on. However, since you guys seem fonder of Bush than I am, I would warn that there is a heck of a lot of Bush-bashing in this one. I think I keep saying this because I don't want people to discredit the book because of this aspect.
I really enjoyed it. Not quite as much as Traveling Mercies, but when it was good, it was very very good. My favorite quote was when she was talking about forgiving her mother:
I assumed Jesus wanted me to forgive her, but I also know he loves honesty and transparency. I don't think he was rolling his eyes impatiently at me while she was in the closet. I don't think much surprises him: this is how we make important changes -- barely, poorly, slowly. And still, he raises his fist in triumph. - Anne Lamott
That really hit home for me. Too often I imagine Jesus sitting up in heaven, looking at his watch, saying, "What is wrong with Kari? Why hasn't she forgiven this person yet?" Especially in one particular situation. It helps to think that just wrestling with it is progress, that he's with me on each of those steps, and that, when I get to the place of forgiveness, he'll be celebrating that victory with me.
(And it was definitely anti-Bush, so I have also been recommending it hesitantly.)
